How to Make Your Own Organic Hamster Food

How to Make Your Own Organic Hamster Food thumbnail
Hamsters do need healthy food!

Hamsters are fairly easy to care for and provide endless entertainment to their owners. However, the hamster pellets that you can purchase at your local pet store may not contain sufficient nutrition for your hamster. If you want your hamster to live as long as possible, consider making your own hamster food. While you are at it, why not make organic hamster food? Organic food for your pet will provide him with all of the nutrients he needs with none of the extra chemicals found in traditional hamster food that could hurt him and lower his lifespan.

Instructions

  1. How to Make Your Own Organic Hamster Food

    • 1

Make a basic seed mix. Mix the sunflower seeds, flax seeds, lentils, and pumpkin seeds together in equal portions.

    • 2

Feed your hamster about a tablespoon of this organic food once a day. He should eat all or most of it. Remove uneaten food when you feed the hamster the next day.

    • 3

Supplement your hamster's diet with fresh vegetables and fruit. Give your hamster just a few bites of a fruit or vegetable each day.

    • 4

Remember that a varied diet is important to your hamster's health. Offer a variety of fresh vegetables, but remember that the majority of the nutrition is going to come from the seed mix.

    • 5

Provide fresh water to your hamster at all times. Consider adding commercially prepared vitamin drops to the water. These can be purchased at your favorite pet store.

    • 6

Provide an occasional treat of hard boiled eggs for your hamster. Remember, your hamster is omnivorous, so an occasional protein will be a welcome addition to his diet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always provide fresh water to your pet hamster to supplement his homemade organic food.

  • Remember that your hamster may pick and choose his foods from the ones you provide. This is perfectly normal!

  • Never feed your hamster garlic, chocolate or other sweets, onions, raw kidney beans, raw potatoes, raw meat, buttercups, or raw eggs. These are all dangerous foods for your pet.
