How to Pass a Pilates Instructor Certification Exam
Pilates exercise programs are rapidly gaining popularity. As such, many fitness professionals want to become Pilates instructors. Although there a few weekend certifications that are relatively easy to pass, some of the more respected programs are quite challenging. Keep in mind that if you fail, you will have to pay to re-test, so it's important to get it right the first time.

Research the various Pilates programs. Some have stricter requirements than others. Some of the more popular programs include Stott Pilates, Polestar Pilates, The Pilates Studio and Power Pilates. if you are simply looking to add Pilates exercises to a regular muscle toning class, you can get a basic certification through Fitour. Take classes with the most popular Pilates instructors in your area. Don't be afraid to ask them about tips for success. If possible, take classes from instructors who are certified the same technique for which you are applying.

Decide whether you want to take a mat certification or a mat and equipment program. Mat exercises are done on the floor. They do not require any expensive equipment, although they might use resistance bands or fitness circles. Equipment classes use the Pilates machines. In order to be certified in equipment, you will need to apprentice with a certified instructor.

Purchase an anatomy book. At the test, you will be required to identify the various muscle groups. Pay particular attention to the core muscles, such as the transverse abdominals and the pelvic floor. Many instructors recommend the Anatomy Coloring Book or Anatomy for Dancers.

Practice performing postural analysis on your friends. This will also be an exam requirement. Practice the Pilates exercises to perfection.

Be prepared to offer alternative exercises for people with injuries. Inform the examiner about any of your own injuries that would require you to modify a specific exercise.

Tips & Warnings
Arrive at the exam as early as possible
Call all muscle groups by their proper name. For example, don't just say "abs," say obliques or transverse abdominals.
Remember to cue the breathing technique.
If your form is not precise, you can fail the exam.
