How to Play Acey Deucey Poker

When playing poker at a home poker game, many dealers try to steer clear of any five-card draw type games. This is because many poker players consider them too bland. That is true with some variations, but not with Acey Deucey Poker. There are eight different wild cards in Acey Deucey Poker which makes for an exciting version of five card draw poker.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather your friends together for your home poker night. Acey Deucey Poker is a variation on five card draw. This means you need to have enough cards for each player to receive eight or nine cards. Considering a player can only discard four cards if they are holding an Ace in their hand and their are only four Aces in the deck, you can have up to six players in Acey Deucey Poker.

    • 2

Have each player ante into the pot before the game starts. Typically with five-card draw poker games the ante should be slightly higher than seven-card stud variations of poker. I suggest two times your minimum bet as the ante.

    • 3

Deal five cards face down to each player. After all players have their face down cards, everyone may view their own cards. Instruct the players at the table at this point that all Aces and Deuces in Acey Deucey Poker are wild.

    • 4

Conduct a betting round with the player to the left of the dealer starting the betting.

    • 5

Explain to each player that they can exchange three cards in their hand for three new cards from the deck at this point. Also, explain if a player has an Ace in their hand they can discard four of the cards in their hand.

    • 6

Deal an equal number of cards to each player as the number they discarded.

    • 7

Conduct another betting round, with the player two seats to the left of the dealer beginning this betting round.

    • 8

Reveal the hands. Each player reveal their poker hand, and declares how they will use any wild cards in their hand. The winner of the pot is determined by which player has the best poker hand.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some players play that you must pay an amount equal to the pot for every wild card you have in your hand when you reveal it during showdown. This increases the pot slightly and might result in a player with a wild card folding in the second betting round to avoid the donation to the pot.

  • If a player discards four cards and it is later revealed that they did not have an ace in their hand they must match the pot with a penalty payment from their chips, and fold immediately.
