Estimate how high the branches you want to reach will be. This is useful when adjusting the length of the trimmer. It will also give you some flexibility with which branches can be altered.

    • 2

Attach the extension to your traditional tree trimmer. Most extensions consist of a specific length of pole that can be attached to the base of the original piece. This also consists of a mechanism that allows you to snip the branches. Normally, this is a length of wire that attaches to a pulley system that allows the cutting blades to close.

Test the trimmer to ensure that everything works properly and that the trimmer meets your height requirements for this job. If it does not, take the tool back down and alter whatever you are not pleased with. It is never a good idea to be working with faulty equipment.

Practice maneuvering with this longer extension. Your balance will be tougher to maintain, and it might be harder to hit the exact right branch until you get a mastery of the physics involved with this tool.

Pick a branch, make sure the blades surround it and pull the cord. This will take some practice as well, as it is hard to pull the cord tight enough to snap the branch at first.
