Whenever you ship a handgun, you need to follow guidelines to ship safely and to avoid penalties. You also want to ensure that your handgun doesn't get lost in transit. Follow these simple steps to help you ship your handgun correctly.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shipping materials
  • Federal Firearms License of recipient
  1. Step 1

You can only ship guns to a licensee. Find a dealer that holds a Federal Firearms License (FFL) in the area that you want to ship your gun to. Ask them to mail or fax a copy of their signed FFL to you. You must have the signed FFL in your possession before you ship your handgun.

  2. Step 2

Package your handgun. Use a sturdy cardboard box, and use bubble wrap or other packaging materials to keep your handgun from shifting during shipping. Do not ship your handgun loaded, and do not put ammunition in the same box as your handgun; it must be shipped separately. Do not put any labels on the box that indicate that your package is a handgun.

  3. Step 3

Address your package. You can only ship handguns to the address listed on the FFL you received from the dealer. Make the label clear and include a return address.

  4. Step 4

Ship your package. A person without a FFL can only ship handguns through common or contract carriers such as UPS and FedEx. Some carriers will not ship firearms, so call them before you bring your handgun to their drop off station. A person that does not hold an FFL cannot ship the package through the U.S. Postal Service. Take the FFL that you received from the dealer with you to the drop off station. Tell the carrier that the package is a handgun. Make sure to request a tracking number.

  5. Step 5

Make sure your package was delivered. Check with both the carrier and the dealer to confirm that the handgun was received.

Tips & Warnings
  • This is not a complete compilation of all applicable shipping laws. Some weapons cannot be shipped into certain jursidictions. If you are unsure about shipping, contact your local dealer, or visit the ATF website.
