Savannah, Georgia, is one of the great cultural centers of the Old South. It is a place filled with tradition, and is one of only a few major Southern cities that were not destroyed during the Civil War. Today, it is a major shipping port and tourist destination. It is especially known for its prewar architecture, and its food. It is also a great city for walking. Here are ways to enjoy it.

Things You'll Need:

  • "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil"
  1. Step 1

Plan your meals in advance. The food in Savannah is so good that this alone makes the city worth visiting. Make reservations at the more popular restaurants. Of particular note are The Lady and Sons, Moon River Brewing Company, Crab Shack, Clary's Cafe, Alligator Soul, The River House, Dolphin Reef, North Beach Grill, and Pirate's House.

  2. Step 2

Read "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" by John Berendt. This novel is based on real events, and has become a part of the city's culture. There are even tours of the city based around the book. If you don't have time to read the book, there is also a reasonably good movie you can rent based on the book.

  3. Step 3

Try to plan your visit during spring or autumn. The summertime is extremely hot and humid, and this makes it difficult to spend much time outdoors.

  4. Step 4

Plan to spend a few hours on River Street. The cobblestone road along the river is lined with stores. restaurants and bars. And don't miss the candy shops. You can usually get free samples of the famous pralines. It is also just fun to stand on River Street and watch the big container ships go by on the Savannah River.

  5. Step 5

Visit Tybee Island. Sites there include the lighthouse, beach, and several great restaurants.

  6. Step 6

Walk, walk, and walk some more. Whether visiting Forsyth Park, touring the squares, strolling down River Street, or checking out the City Market, walking is the best way to see Savannah.
