Do you have files that you need to transfer from one PC to another? There are many ways that this can be accomplished. However, the easiest way to do this without going through the hassle of networking your computers is with removable storage. Using this method the only thing you have to do is move files from your hard drive to the removable drive then transfer the drive to the other PC. This is mockingly called the “sneakernet” in geek talk. Here are the steps that you need to take to accomplish this.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Removable Storage Device
Step1
Locate all of the files that you want moved. Sometimes it’s easier to move them all if you consolidate them into one folder.
Step2
Plug your removable storage device into your PC. Make sure that the device you have selected has enough room for the files you are going to transfer. After plugging the device in, you will see a window pop up that says “removable media” with a drive letter assigned to it.
Step3
Click on “open folder to view files.” This will open up the drive in a separate window. Leave this window open for the time being.
Step4
Highlight all of the files that you want transferred from this PC and drag them over to the removable media. When you are finished, go ahead and close out the window that says “Removable Disk.”
Step5
Locate the icon on the bottom right side of the screen that has a green arrow over a little green square and double click on it. A window will open up that says “safely remove hardware” with a list of removable devices. Find your device on the list and double click on it. This will make sure that your PC is finished interacting with the storage device, so that no files get damaged when you remove the device from the PC.
Step6
Plug the removable storage device into the other PC. Open it using Steps 1 to 3.
Step7
Locate the files you wanted transferred on the removable storage, and drag them onto your PC hard drive.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always use the “safely remove hardware” icon before removing your storage device from the PC. If you yank the device out while it’s still transferring files, this can corrupt your files.
