Things You'll Need:
- Valid identification
- Proof of residency
- Clean background
- Proof of valid firearms training
-
Step 1
The local sheriff’s department in your area typically issues concealed weapons permits, so they will be a starting point. Each state and jurisdiction has its own guidelines and laws as to who qualifies for a concealed weapons permit, so if you are unsure as to whether or not you qualify, contact your local law enforcement agency.
-
Step 2
You will most likely need to complete a National Rifle Association approved handgun or concealed weapons class in order to be considered for a concealed permit. Most agencies require that any applicant have proof of proper training and maintenance of a concealed weapon, and most NRA-affiliated agencies offer classes for just this purpose. You might also be able to substitute law enforcement or military firearms training if you have had either of those. If you take an NRA course, they will give you a certificate of completion that you will need to take with you when you apply for your permit.
-
Step 3
Contact your local agency and schedule an appointment for your permit. You should ask what documentation you will need to bring, what time they are open for permit applications and any other special requirements that might be necessary. They will give you information about costs and fees as well when you call, so be sure to have all of that available when you apply.
-
Step 4
Fill out all paperwork clearly and completely. The paperwork will most likely ask for your full name, date of birth, social security number, proof of residency and proof of firearms training. The required fees will be collected from you at that time, as well as a complete set of fingerprints. The application and fingerprints will be used to run a thorough background check to determine that you are eligible for a permit. You should be given a time frame as to when your permit will be available.
-
Step 5
If your permit is approved, you should be contacted and told when you can come in and finish the process. Your photograph will most likely be taken and will appear on your concealed weapons permit along with your information and a fingerprint. Your permit will have basic identification information on it and will serve as valid proof to law enforcement and the public that you are legally allowed to carry a concealed weapon.
-
Step 6
Your permit comes with a certain set of guidelines and responsibilities. You can check with your local issuing agency to find out exactly what your regulations entail and what to do if your permit is lost, stolen or if you move. They will also tell you how long your permit is valid for, and will give you information on any other specifics that you need to know to properly enjoy your new concealed weapons permit.
