Peru is a country filled with history, delicious cuisine and awe-inspiring geography. Getting to Peru can be expensive, though, due to the long flight required. Here are several tips for saving money on your airfare.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer
  • Internet access
Step1
Book a flight with a discount air carrier. Carriers like Spirit fly down to Lima for a smaller fee than the legacy carriers. The only drawback is that you may have to take a red-eye flight. Most of Spirit's flights depart from Ft. Lauderdale at about 6 p.m. and arrive at 11 p.m. the same day. Their return flights leave at about 11 p.m. and arrive back in Ft. Lauderdale at 6 a.m. If you are ready for this kind of late-night flying, you can save a couple hundred dollars. If you log on to spiritair.com, you can compare their prices to those of legacy air carriers like American. You can even pay a small fee to be part of Spirit's frequent-flying club, which will give you access to $9 fares.
Step2
Fly during the off-season. The period from May to October is considered winter in Peru. Less people are traveling to the country, so the fares are usually lower. One drawback to flying to Peru during this time is that the weather is cooler and the skies are very overcast. If you are staying by the coast, the fog will surround you all day long.
Step3
Go directly to travel agencies that specialize in trips to Peru. Sometimes these agencies get block of tickets that are lumped into hotel packages, which can save you a couple hundred dollars.
Step4
Log on to cheapflights.com for more options. If you are looking to save time and don't want to check each individual airline, this site will give you a one-page comparison of several carriers and the prices of their tickets to Peru.
Step5
Call the South American Travel Agency. They will not only source the best tickets, but can also work in tours for your Peru trip. The agency can be reached at (800) 747-4541.

Tips & Warnings

  • Searching late at night may save you money on fares. Some experts say that higher fares are cleared and lower fares are made available after 9 p.m.
  • Be certain of your airline's cancellation policy. Some airlines will cancel a flight if it is not filled, to save money. Make sure you have backup plans if you are stuck in Peru for an extra night.
