When it’s time to hit the road or board your plane, remember that business trips are no excuse for overindulgence. Most professional excursions move at a fast pace, leaving little time for stocking up on healthy foods or researching low-calorie entrées. Nevertheless, a little preparation and some creative food choices will keep your fitness routine from derailing along the way to your client’s favorite restaurant.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Ignore the Golden Arches shining like a beacon beyond the exit ramp and head for the nearest grocery store instead. When you get there, be sure to fill your cart with cheese, lunchmeat, low-fat condiments and fruit. Although most hotel refrigerators are small, they should have no problem holding your selections and keeping them fresh. You’ll also want to stock a closet or drawer with bread, peanut butter, wheat crackers and tea. If you’re staying at the same hotel for the duration of your trip, this food supply will not only allow you to eat healthy, but it will also dramatically reduce what you would normally spend when eating out. Some trips call for multiple stops at different hotels. In this case, bring along an insulated cooler to transport your goods from one location to another.

  2. Step 2

Make wise selections during business meals. Although your clients or coworkers will probably want you to indulge yourself right along with them, remember that successful businesspersons lead the crowd rather than following them. Yes, the double-decker cherry fudge brownie your patron is having will seem devilishly tempting, but selecting a healthier dessert is not likely to offend them or diminish your chances of striking an equitable deal. The same thing goes for deep-fried appetizers, fatty entrées and alcoholic drinks. Picking a fruit platter instead of Buffalo wings and a couple glasses of wine over several beers will lower your caloric intake, minimize saturated fat and reduce sugar consumption. In fact, these choices will allow you to eat more than your companions without driving your blood pressure through the restaurant’s roof.

  3. Step 3

Combat the urge to eat unhealthy foods by being prepared. When you’re flying to your destination, pass on unwholesome airline snacks like salty peanuts and sugary cookies. Instead, bring along some cheese and crackers in your carry-on luggage. They’re just as filling and much better for you. If you’re darting around town between meetings and want to order a quick meal, try grabbing a bagel at a coffee shop or a veggie wrap from Subway. When your coworkers choose the location and you find yourself at a burger joint, order fish or chicken and substitute the fries for something that wasn’t fished out of an oily cauldron. Drink plenty of water and bring along a few granola bars to curb those urges for glazed donuts that will surely arise. If all else fails, chew some gum until you can get back to the refrigerated treasure chest waiting in your hotel room. Munch on a turkey sandwich before bedtime and you’ll sleep like a baby--minus the indigestion, bedwetting, and crying that your unhealthy companions might experience.
