Handheld video games can be great for the family when you are on long road trips. Children can get really anxious when they are patiently wait to arrive at the destination. You can now even purchase car chargers for the handheld systems so you never have to worry about carrying spare batteries.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Handheld video game system
Step1
Find games that are fun for the whole family. You want it to be challenging so it lasts a long time, but you don’t want your children to get frustrated and turn it off. Games for the Nintendo DS like Mario Party and Mario Kart are great games for more than one player and can provide hours of entertainment. You can play simultaneously for a competition if you have more than one Nintendo DS.
Step2
Pick games that are educational. The children can learn something while they are having fun playing games. If you are looking for educational games, they are easy to spot. Just make sure they are not the shooting/fighting type, and you should be good. You can also check the rating system at the bottom of the packaging, this will also help you decide if it is educational or not.
Step3
Pick classic games. A lot of classic board games now come in electronic handheld versions, even on video game systems. It is a lot easier to carry several video games with you than it is to haul actual board games that take up a lot of space. The handheld versions of these games are just as fun and will keep children occupied for hours.
Step4
Purchase a carrying case for the games and the video game system. Cars can get really messy when you are on a long car ride so it is nice to have something where you can store them all when you are not using them. Carrying cases are relatively inexpensive and you keep everything organized. Kids will enjoy picking them out too because they come in fun designs and colors.
Step5
Trade the video games back in when you get home. Most likely by the time you get home from your car ride your children will be bored with some of the video games. There are several video game stores around that will pay you cash or credit for your used video games, and you can use the money to buy new ones. Video games can be expensive sometimes and this is the best way to save some cost on them.

Tips & Warnings

  • A variety of games will keep the kids playing.
  • Purchase used video games to save on the cost. You can trade them in later to get some money back.
  • Always take breaks when playing video games for a long time so you don't develop a headache.
