Step 1
Try more than one, especially if you've never been to a smoke shop. It can be a great experience, but smoke shops are like personalities: No two are exactly the same. If you have a not-so-good-time at the first one you visit, don't give up on the rest. For instance, if you don't like crowds and small spaces, you probably won't enjoy yourself at Pipes Plus of Texas, located on Guadalupe Street. Similarly, if the first smoke shop in Austin that you visit is incredible, keep in mind that it's all right to familiarize yourself with the rest. If Bobalu Cigar Company is the first smoke shop you step foot in, you'll be blown away by their knowledgeable staff of professional cigar rollers. Just remember, there's no steadfast rule that says you can't have more than one favorite.

Step 2
Don't be shy! Smoke shops can be somewhat intimidating. Some of the best ones in Austin are known and--of all things--loved for their rude staff. Kasbah, also located on Guadalupe, is known for some of the rudest customer service around, but people keep coming back for more! On the flip side, Heroes and Legacies Cigars and Gifts on Research Boulevard is touted to have the friendliest staff in Austin. Take charge and get the most out of the best exotic cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco.

Step 3
Mind your budget. Found on the corner of Dittman and South 1st Street is Mr. Nice Guys. It is the only independently owned smoke shop in Austin and offers great low prices. This comes in handy if you're a novice and don't want to drop a lot of cash on something you may not enjoy. Once you become a more seasoned connoisseur, you can purchase a sampling of high end-tobaccos and pipes from Heroes and Legacies.
