Maine lobster comes in fresh off the boats each day.

At the watery southern tip of Maine sits a small town named Kittery. It is situated on Spruce Creek, the Piscataqua River and the Atlantic Ocean, making it rich in natural resources. Nearby points of interest include Ogunquit, York and Kennebunkport. To most visitors, though, Kittery is best known for its shopping.

With over 120 outlet stores, Kittery is a great place to stock up on back-to-school gear, new kitchen items, gifts for loved ones and more. The Kittery Outlets line a long stretch of Route 1, the main drag through town.

Kittery Trading Post is the best-known outdoor superstore in southern Maine. In addition to men's, women's and kids' apparel, Kittery Trading Post has huge selections in their hunting, fishing, camping, boating and winter sports departments.-It's a great place to pick up souvenirs for friends, too. Maple-sugar candy, lobster shaped barley pops, post cards and T shirts are all available in this rustic, lodge-themed landmark.

Shopping all morning can leave you famished. For a taste of authentic New England, a local favorite is The Weathervane Seafood Restaurant. Broiled, boiled, baked and fried seafood are available from 11a.m. to 9:30 p.m. The best part? It's fresh from the fishing boats off the Maine coast.

Enjoy the rocky Maine coastline in the afternoon. Two small beaches, Crescent Beach and Seapoint Beach, offer a decent mix of sand and rocky bluffs. For breathtaking walks, visit Fort Foster Park and hike its trails. Fort Foster features a long pier and a rocky beach.

Tips & Warnings

  • Dogs are allowed on Kittery beaches before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m. This restriction applies from June 15 to September 10.

  • Swimming in Maine is not for the faint of heart. The water at the state's beaches rarely exceeds 62 degrees!
