Plan a Pirate Party
-
1
Buy or make pirate party invitations. If you're crafty, you can make your own invitations from blank white all-purpose greeting cards and embellish them with scrapbooking elements. Be sure to mail them 2 to 3 weeks before the party.
-
2
Order your pirate party decorations. You can decorate for a pirate party with any tropical decor, old sails or a skull and crossbones motif. A treasure chest can hold the goody bags. You can leave it closed and make a pirate's map on parchment paper--"X" marks the spot.

3
Contact your local bakery and ask about pirate birthday cakes. Some bakeries can put toy plastic pirates on a ship amidst blue icing waves, others can recreate a tropical island, and still others can make an elaborate treasure chest with fondant and metallic candy coins. Interview several bakeries and ask to see pictures of their past work.

4
Plan a pirate party menu. Tropical fruits would be appropriate, since pirates must have eaten something while burying their treasure. Try making a "sail" for a miniature hot dog using a toothpick and a piece of paper. You could also serve chicken nuggets and call them "gold nuggets."
-
5
Create your pirate party playlist. For an older crowd of kids, try Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean" soundtrack. For the younger set, "Veggie Tales" has a pirate-themed CD available. For an adults pirate party, there are collections of rowdy shanties and pirate songs to sing while you "Drink up me Hearties Yo Ho."
-
6
Play pirate party games. Make a "hook hand" by poking a candy cane through a plastic cup. See who can fish the most pretzels from a bowl using their pirate hand. Try a peg leg race using an old pair of crutches. Have participants race to the finish line with one leg and one crutch. Modify the traditional party game and have guests "pin the parrot" on a pirate picture.

Tips & Warnings
Ask guests to wear their pirate costumes, or buy a few extra eyepatches, pirate hats or other pirate accessories, and distribute them as pirate party favors.
Running a peg legged race with an eye patch could be dangerous. Be sure there are plenty of soft places to land or instruct children to remove their eye patch before the race.
