Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
- Can of colored spray or white powder to mark areas
- Shovel
- Gravel
- Sand
- Spirit-level
- Machine or hand tamper (vibrating compactor)
- Interlocking concrete pavers
- Edging (2 x 4 lumber, concrete blocks or aluminum)
- Concrete wet saw (with diamond blade)
Step1
Mark the area using color spray or white powder where you will place the interlocking concrete pavers.
Step2
Excavate the soil to desired depth. Make sure that there is enough space to hold 6 inches of crushed stones, gravel and sand. Add additional depth of 2 inches if you are installing pavers in high or heavy traffic areas such as driveways. When digging the soil, make sure to do a gradual slope away from any building or structure to keep water away.
Step3
Add the crushed stones and gravel which will constitute as your base. Use a machine tamper or soil compactor to ensure that the base is solidly compacted. Add 2 inches layer of sand then continue tamping on to achieve a solid and smooth surface.
Step4
Place a support edge or barrier. This can be made of aluminum, 2 x 4 lumber or concrete blocks. The support edge or barrier will keep the interlocking concrete pavers in place.
Step5
Lay down the interlocking concrete pavers one by one carefully on the sand. Follow the pattern that you plan to use. Make sure that the connection arrows are aligned with the joint lines so that they will interlock securely.
Step6
Cut any piece that needs cutting using a concrete saw with diamond blade. You may need to to this to fit the concrete paving stones in corners or towards the end to achieve even edges.
Step7
Sweep on additional sand on top of the interlocking concrete pavers to fill in the small gaps, this will ensure that the installation is tighter and less water will seep through the crevices in between the pavers.
Step8
Water using a garden hose to harden the sand in between the pavers and to wash any dirt or debris.
