How to Hike On Mount Washington

The mountain has the highest recorded wind speed on the globe, as well as some of the worst weather. Many have died of exposure to the elements there, even during the warm summer months, so hikers need to be aware of the dangers and take a few precautions.

Plan your route carefully. The best starting point for a hike is the Appalachian Mountain Club’s visitor center located along New Hampshire State Highway 16 in Pinkham Notch. It is a 4,000-foot vertical climb to the top, so only experienced hikers in top physical condition should attempt a summit hike. Besides there is auto highway and cog railway that runs to the top in the summer, so you will be immersed by tourists visiting the weather station, gift shop and restaurant. However, on the flanks of Mount Washington, there are some exceptionally beautiful hikes. If you have any questions, ask at the visitor center as they are a wealth of information.

Get an updated weather forecast. This means a local forecast that includes conditions on the summer. Don’t judge the weather at the top, by the conditions at Pinkham Notch. It can be 90 degrees and clear at the bottom, but when you get above timberline, the temperature could drop into the 50’s and the wind could pick up to 50 mph or more. For someone in shorts, that could be hypothermia weather.

3
Pack extra clothing no matter, what the forecast is. Always carry long pants, a sweater, wind pants, a wind parka and a warm cap. You might need them, even in August.
-
4
Bring extra water and food. For a strenuous climb, plan on at least a half-gallon of water and some extra rations. Also a map, compass, flashlight and a fire starter are a must.
-
5
Make the most of the day. Most summer days bring good weather conditions and excellent views. Enjoy your time on the mountain and remember, you don’t get to do this every day.
