Learn local culture. Before embarking on your trip to Cambodia, you should be familiar with their culture and customs. Due to their indescribable horror of their recent history (Pol Pot's reign of terror was only 30 years ago), most Cambodians act very solemn and shy around tourists. Please do not let their seemingly unfriendliness offend you. Also, you should know that Cambodians are not accustomed to being the subject of photographs, so it would be a good idea not to take photographs of the locals.

Visit museums. Visiting the museums that are a reminder of the unspeakable horror that the Cambodians endured is a must. In the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, you will be led through the stark hallways and rooms to learn of the victims who were tortured there. For obvious reasons, this museum is not suitable for children as it still houses the 30 year old bloodstains of countless victims.

Find lodging. You will quickly find that not all of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, is solemn and dark. With tourism becoming increasingly popular, especially to the world's rich and famous, Cambodian hotels host a wide range of prices and amenities. It is not uncommon to find very nice hotels for only $30 (U.S.) a night. However, there are a few that charge guests $100 or more a night.

See out dining. Dining in Cambodia is not as difficult as a person might initially think. There are numerous restaurants in Phnom Penh that serve American, French and Italian cuisines.
