Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cloth
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Cotton balls or pillow stuffing
  • Sachet
  • Potpourri
  • Fragrance
  1. Step 1

Decide on the size of the pillow. It is recommended to use a ruler to cut out your pillow square from the fabric of your choosing. You can use any fabric you want and you can buy a nice pattern very cheap at any Wal-Mart. Measure 6 inches on all four sides and cut. You need to cut two identical squares to make the pillow.

  2. Step 2

Cut out a square of fabric for the top of the pillow where you will slide in your sachet. This should be smaller than the squares for the pillow. It is recommended to have 3 inches on all sides. Use your ruler for accurate measurements.

  3. Step 3

Place your 6-inch squares on top of each other with the design side of the fabric not showing. Basically it will look inside out for now. Sew all the way around the edges of the fabric leaving a small opening. Tie your knots and then fold the pillow inside right. This allows you to create a pillow without having to look at the stitches. You can do this step by hand or with a sewing machine.

  4. Step 4

Now stuff your square of fabric with pillow stuffing or cotton balls. Make it full, but not overly full. Stuff it through the hole you left open.

  5. Step 5

Close up the hole with your needle and thread. Make small stitches. You will have to do this by hand. Your pillow is now complete and you can move on to the pocket for the sachet.

  6. Step 6

Sew your 3-inch fabric on to the top of the pillow on three sides leaving the top side completely open. Make sure it is in the middle so it looks nice. This will allow you access to slide your sachet in and out as you need to replace potpourri or fragrance.

  7. Step 7

Buy a sachet to fill at your local craft store. They look like little bags with a drawstring at the top. They are see through and come in different colors. They are perfect because they are breathable and allow the fragrances to come out freely. The sachets are inexpensive so you can buy multiple sachets if you want to create more than one sachet pillow.

  8. Step 8

Fill your sachet with potpourri. There are so many different scented potpourri's you are just going to have to sniff a few until you find a smell you like. Craft stores and departments stores both sell potpourri.

  9. Step 9

Add some perfume or fragrance to your potpourri. You only need a few drops since fragrance is strong. You can always take the sachet out of your pillow and add more when the smell dies down. Make sure the fragrance matches the smell of the potpourri. You don't want clashing smells that are going to give people a headache.

  10. Step 10

Use the drawstring to tie up the sachet and then slide it in to it's pocket in the pillow. Place on a bed, couch or basket and enjoy.

Tips & Warnings
  • You may want to take some time to mix and match smells before you decide which ones to put in your sachet. You can do this in some plastic sandwich baggies until you get your desired combination.
  • Don't use more than a few drops of fragrance at once. The majority of people can't handle super strong smells. You don't want to give your guests a headache, you just want to wow them with the pleasant scents.
