Instructions

    • 1
      An inside out braid.

Sitting in front of a mirror, practice an inside out-braid on a big section of hair.

    • 2

Divide your hair down the middle of your head and clip one half back and out of the way. Brush out the other half so it's easier to work with.

    • 3
      Example of the three sections.

Take the hair you just brushed out and separate a small piece in the front, on your hairline. Divide that piece into three equal parts.

    • 4

Take the three pieces and hold the center and right piece in your right hand, keeping them separate. Hold the left piece in your left hand. Use your left index finger to pull the far right piece under the centerpiece, making it the center. You should now be holding one piece in your right hand and two in your left. Repeat on the other side, bringing the far left piece under the center piece.

      A quickly done inside-out braid

Continue pulling sections under the middle section, adding loose hair to every section you braid. Make sure that the amount of loose hair you add stays the same every time, even as your sections get bigger with added hair. You should begin to see a braid forming that sits on top of your head.

Fun part, though not quite small enough to be cornrows.

Take your hair out when you are able to successfully make an inside-out braid. Divide your hair into small rows to braid. You can part all your hair first, or part it as you go. Keep in mind that it is easier to work from the top of your head first, moving toward the sides. Add a little gel or hair wax to keep your hair from frizzing too much. As you get better at the process, you can part your hair into fun designs but, in the beginning, straight rows are easier. It's also easier to go only to the crown of your head the first time because it's hard to part down the back of your head.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fine hair is much harder to work with. If your hair is really fine, you will have to add more gel or wax to keep it in the cornrows.
