If you have ever dealt with a lice infestation, you know how hard head lice are to get rid of. Experts suggest using a medicated treatment such as RID or Nix, but to the dismay of most, repeated treatments are needed to eliminate a lice infestation. The problem with this is that the treatments are both expensive and somewhat toxic. For this reason, many have turned to natural home remedies. Once such remedy that has proven to be effective is mayonnaise. Here are instructions on how to get rid of head lice using mayonnaise.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mayonnaise
  • Shower cap
  • Dawn dishwashing liquid
  • Tea tree oil
  • Nit comb
  1. Step 1

Apply a liberal amount of mayonnaise to the hair. Use as much mayonnaise as the hair will hold without dripping. The amount you use will vary depending on the thickness of the hair.

  2. Step 2

Use a salon plastic cap to cover the treated hair. You may want to add some saran rap around the band of the cap to make sure nothing leaks out.

  3. Step 3

Leave the treatment on the hair, preferably overnight, but for no less than two hours. If you can leave it on for up to 12 hours, that would be best.

  4. Step 4

Wash the mayonnaise out of the hair using Dawn dishwashing liquid, to cut the grease of the mayonnaise. You can wash the hair a second time using tea tree oil soap.

  5. Step 5

Using a nit comb, remove any remaining nits from the hair. You can stick the nits and any lice to duct tape, which you can then dispose of in a sealed plastic bag.

  6. Step 6

Repeat Steps 1 through 5 on a daily basis until you are sure there are no more lice in the hair. Repeat the treatment again in 10 days to kill any eggs that may have hatched. Even when using medicated treatments, you will find yourself repeating the treatment.

Tips & Warnings
  • A great side effect of using mayonnaise to eliminate lice from the hair is that the hair will be well conditioned and shiny.
  • Be sure to treat the home, bedding and clothing for lice as well.
