Children simply love Halloween and what's not to love? It's a holiday that involves going and getting bags upon bags of free candy. It's a kid's dream come true. Sadly, this isn't the case for the many children that suffer from juvenile diabetes. Instead of a night filled with treats, most diabetics must spend the night at home. It doesn't have to be this way though. There are several treats available that are perfect for diabetics.

From Quick Guide: Happy, Safe Halloween
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open a cookbook. One of the easiest ways to find Halloween candy for children is to make it yourself. When you make treats yourself, you don't have to worry about unsafe ingredients. You can be sure that the candy you give your children is not only low in sugar, but carbs as well. If you like, you can make several different treats so that your child gets the full holiday experience.

  2. Step 2

Look for low carb candy. Many companies now make low carb candy. It doesn't matter if they are decorated in holiday packaging or not. You can easily make any treats festive by packaging them in Halloween treat bags. Your children will love being able to take their treats to school the next day to share with friends.

  3. Step 3

Visit gourmet candy stores. If you want something truly special for your children, visit a gourmet store. Gourmet stores now offer several varieties of treats intended for children who have food allergies and diabetes. Many of these treats are made simply with dark chocolate, but are molded into Halloween shapes.

  4. Step 4

Shop online. Online you will find several shops that specialize in sugar-free candy. Many of these shops make special treats during the holidays. Best of all, you may be able to find a sugar-free version of your child's favorite candy. This would make a great treat if your child is no longer able to have their favorite treat.

  5. Step 5

Speak with other parents. There's a good chance that you know parents that also have diabetic children. If your child has just recently became a diabetic, these parents may know more about diabetes than you do. They may also be able to tell you where to find these best Halloween treats.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you want to give your children the full Halloween experience, take candy to your friends and relatives for them to give out.
  • If you make treats that can be frozen, you will be able to better control the amount eaten.
  • Be sure to order treats early enough to arrive for Halloween.
