Your main fuel filter is located against the left rear frame rail just past the rear axle and adjacent to the fuel tank. Replacing the mount bolts is fairly easy once the new filter is in place. This article will explain how to install fuel filter mounting bolts.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two open end box end wrenches
  • Ratchet and socket (optional)
  • Ratchet extension (optional)
  • Drip pans
  • Flat tipped screw driver
  • Hydraulic jack and jack stands

Mounting the main fuel filter to the frame rail.

  1. Step 1

Before hooking up the fuel lines to either end of the fuel filter, locate the bolt holes corresponding to the mount bracket on the fuel filter and push the mount bolts through the mount bracket and through the bolt holes in the frame rail.

  2. Step 2

When the mount bolts are lined up with the bracket holes and frame rail, put the washers over the bolt and flush with the mount bracket. Screw the mount nuts on the bolts by turning them clockwise until hand tight.

  3. Step 3

The input fuel line and the output line have a length of neoprene hose clamped to the metal fuel line. Push the fuel filter into these hoses and tighten the clamp with your flat tip screwdriver. Turn the clamp bolts clockwise until they are fully engaged.

  4. Step 4

Once the fuel lines are secured to the filter, use your open end box end wrenches to tighten the nuts until they are snug against the frame rail. You may also use a ratchet and socket and one open end box end wrench to hold the bolt head in place and tighten the nuts until secured to the frame rail.

  5. Step 5

Start the engine and check for leaks. If the lines are leaking at the fuel filter, tighten the clamps until the leaks stop.
