Being tan is in, but being burned by the sun's harmful rays is not. Many people use sunless face tanners to add a special glow. Sunless face tanners are abundant on the market. You can pick and choose your product as well as your price. Plan on paying around $10 for the tanners that can buy at the grocery store. Face tanners are simple to use and require very little practice.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sunless face tanner
  1. Step 1

Clean your face. Start with a squeaky clean, dry face. It is important that your skin be dry, but not flaky. If you have dry areas that flake, using sunless face tanner will highlight these areas. In this case, use a moisturizer and hydrate your skin prior to using the tanner.

  2. Step 2

    Wash your hands.

  3. Step 3

    Retrieve the sunless face tanner.

  4. Step 4

Read the instructions. Be thorough and understand what you are doing. The application process is not difficult, but you need to be advised of any warnings and possible reactions. The instructions will also tell you if the tanner goes on clear or if it has color. If your tanner is tinted (colored), it is easier for you to see what you are doing and exactly how much tanner you are applying.

  5. Step 5

Apply the tanner. Squeeze a small amount (about a dime size) of tanner onto the tips of your index and middle fingers. Slowly and lightly apply the tanner to your forehead. Then, work your way down, starting at your temples, to your eyes, nose, and then your cheeks. Then, very lightly, apply tanner around your mouth. You will also want to apply tanner to your neck so there is no line or difference in color between your face and neck. While applying, if you need more tanner, squeeze out small amounts at a time.

  6. Step 6

Wash your hands with warm water and soap.

  7. Step 7

Wait. The tanner's package instructions will tell you how long it will take for results to be seen. If you want to go darker, or if you need to fix a streak or smear, wait until your new tan is fully visible. Then you can add more color to your face.

Tips & Warnings
  • Squeeze tiny amounts, never larger than a dime size, of tanner at a time. You can always apply more, but it is impossible to go back to less. Spread the tanner evenly and carefully. Wash your hands! Sunless face tanner will stain your hands. Be sure to wash the creases of your fingers thoroughly because tanner can build up in between your fingers.
  • Always try a test spot the first time you use sunless face tanner. Take a small amount of tanner and apply it to a hidden part of your body to see if you have an allergic reaction. If an allergic reaction should occur while using tanner, such as hives, shortness of breath, wheezing, tongue, mouth, or facial swelling, call 911 and get to an emergency room immediately.
