Things You'll Need:
- Lighting
- Panic Button
-
Step 1
Be aware of your surroundings. In other words, take small steps like remembering where you parked. Usually the sections are marked with a number, letter or even a character of reference. Whatever the case, do not forget where your car is. Even if you have to write it down on a post it note, make sure you or someone in your party knows where to find the car when you return. Better yet, if you see a lot of questionable activity, do not even get out of the car. Go to the mall another day or time.
-
Step 2
Try to go during the day. If you cannot do this, then go at night and park in a well-lighted area as close to the doors as possible. Try to avoid underground parking or large parking garages if at all possible. Better yet, bring a friend, associate or family member along or have a security guard walk you to and from your car. They are happy to do this.
-
Step 3
Have your keys ready with your car button or key in hand as you walk. Walk quickly and carefully with a purpose, and do not linger; always look around the area you are walking in and hold your head up high. If your instincts tell you something is wrong or someone is following you, click the panic button on your key chain. Also, carry a small whistle or pepper spray on your key chain so you can grab it in a hurry if needed. Have your cell phone on your belt or in a pocket where you can call authorities in case of emergency.
-
Step 4
If you must go to the mall during the holidays, place your packages in a locked trunk, or out of plain sight in a car. Thieves will look through your car windows to see if you have anything of value. This includes stereos, gloves, purses, wallets, expensive electronics, GPS systems, cell phones, radar detectors and satellite radio units. Most of these things are detachable and can be easily stored in another place in your car.
-
Step 5
Keep your wallet in your pocket and only carry a small purse close to your body if needed. Also keep your keys either in your hand or in your pocket in the event an article is stolen so you will not be stranded.

on 2/7/2009 Very good tips! It's important to always be aware of all your surroundings AND go with your first instinct -- NEVER say oh that's silly there's nothing to worry about. I learned that from EXPERIENCE. 5*
