Microsoft Word is a program used universally by people who need a word processor for their computer. If you have Works or Notepad, you have probably found you cannot share documents with other people because they are not compatible. Word can be expensive to purchase depending on your budget. Fortunately, there are a few ways to get around this problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Download a free trial of Microsoft Word. Microsoft's website gives you the option of downloading the program for free. Use it to write, save and send Word documents just like everyone else. However, this is a limited trial and access will run out in a month or so.

Put Microsoft Word Viewer on your computer. This is a free download that allows you to view Word documents so you are not totally out of the loop. However, this does not allow you to write on the documents or create your own Word documents.

    • 3

See if your employer uses Microsoft Office, which includes Word. Chances are, your office uses this program. Do all of your Word work at your job. This way you will never have to pay for this expensive program. The only downside is that it could interfere with your hours at work.

    • 4

Ask a friend with Microsoft Office to let you borrow a disc and password. You can download Word for free if you have a disc and the licensing code that comes along with it. Without the licensing code, however, the disc is useless. Make sure you have both available before beginning.

    • 5

Purchase a used computer. Many people who are selling used computers offer to keep programs like Word on the computer as an added selling point. This will save you a ton of money even if you have to buy a new computer.

    • 6

Check with a local university for free copies of Microsoft Word if you attend college. Often, universities will give students copies of the complete Microsoft Office collection for use with classes. If you do not attend college, ask a friend or relative who does to pick you up a copy.
