Taking proper care of your chainsaw can greatly increase the life of this great power tool. Chainsaws can be used for so many things and if you take precautions, your chainsaw will last for many years.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Oil
  • Fuel
  • Fuel stabilizer
  • Plastic
  1. Step 1

Mix the fuel correctly. If you have a gas powered chainsaw, there is a chance that you need to mix in oil with your gasoline. The mixture will need to be at a specific ratio. Using the correct ratio for your machine will ensure that the engine works properly and the chainsaw will last longer.

  2. Step 2

Use a sharp blade. Using a sharp blade on your chainsaw makes it easier to handle and gives you greater precision. Using a dull chainsaw blade can put undue stress on the chainsaw motor, which could severely shorten its life.

  3. Step 3

Keep the blade at the proper tension. Blade tension that is too loose is dangerous and blade tension that is too tight can cause stress to your chainsaw motor. If you don't know how to adjust the tension properly, you may want to take the chainsaw to a small engine shop for adjustment.

  4. Step 4

Add fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank when you put the chainsaw away. If you know you are not going to use the chainsaw for a while, fuel stabilizer will help the gas stay usable and will prevent damage to the engine. If you don't add fuel stabilizer, it is best to empty the fuel from the tank of the chainsaw.

  5. Step 5

Wrap the chainsaw in plastic when you store it. Plastic will help prevent rust from forming on the chainsaw and also prevent water from getting into the fuel tank.
