If you're working in Adobe InDesign, the "Selection" tool (black arrow) is a necessary tool to select and manipulate elements on the page.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Similar to many other software programs, clicking on a textbox or graphic while the "Selection" tool is active will select the element. To move the element to another spot on the page, select the element and drag it with the mouse.

  2. Step 2

To crop a figure, use the "Selection" tool and click on the graphic. A blue border with eight scale handles (small white boxes) will appear.

  3. Step 3

Drag the scale handles to increase or decrease the size of the blue box. This is actually a frame around the graphic and does not change the size of the graphic at all.

  4. Step 4

If your graphic is smaller than the blue frame and you would like the frame to fit exactly, double click any of the scale handles and the frame will resize to fit the edge of the graphic.

  5. Step 5

To see a frame's size information (but not information about the actual graphic inside), select the image with the "Selection" tool and look at the "Control" panel or "Transform" panel.

Tips & Warnings
  • To edit a graphic inside a frame, you must select the "Direct Selection" tool first.
