Genetic Engineering

Biotechnology is a big word that encompasses a large field. Everything from genetic engineering of crops to stem-cell research to "smart" robotic replacement limbs can be considered as biotech. This promising field has already helped society in such diverse applications as crop yields and retro-viral engineering but the future of biotech shows even more promise. With enough investment, this sector could solve some of mankind's oldest and most deadly problems, such as disease and famine. Some biotech analysts even go so far as to promise an end to death itself. Be a part of this exciting technology by purchasing a biotech stock.

Instructions

    • 1

Call your broker and express your interest in investing in the biotech sector. They should be able to give you their reccomendations. If you invest on your own using an online brokerage, research using the brokerage site or your preferred search engine to find the stock you want to invest in.

    • 2

For this example, say you reasearched "biotechnology companies" and have decided to buy stock in Genentech, a large U.S. based biotechnology firm.

    • 3

If using a broker, simply ask to invest a certain amount in Genentech. Your broker should advise on whether they think that is a reasonable investment or not.

    • 4

If using your own online brokerage account, navigate to the trade page and then click on the "Buy stock" button. Input the ticker symbol for Genentech, "DNA." You should then be asked how many shares you want to buy or, alternatively, how much money you want to invest. Check the current market price on your preferred financial website to determine the amount per share.

    • 5

Click on buy with a "Market order" for the simplest kind of trade. A market order must be made while the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) is open and normal trade is taking place. You should receive confirmation that you have bought that number of shares of Genetech.

Tips & Warnings

  • Investing in individual companies can be risky. It is important that you do your research to determine if you think a stock is a good investment. If you are new to investing overall, it is important to learn as much as you can about how markets and investments work.

  • The most important rule of investing is to never invest more than you can afford to lose.
