  1. Step 1

Double-click on the Adobe Photoshop desktop icon to open the program, or navigate through the start menu to locate Photoshop in your list of programs.

  2. Step 2

Click on "File" on the bar at the top of the screen and then choose "New". A new window will pop up with several options.

  3. Step 3

Set the size you want your image to be by entering the height and width of the picture in either inches or pixels. Type in the title of your image in the "Name" field and then click on "OK".

  4. Step 4

Find the tool menu on your screen and click on the "brush tool" icon. The tool menu usually defaults to the left side of the screen, but it can be moved anywhere.

  5. Step 5

Navigate the mouse pointer to the bottom of the tool menu where there will be two large overlapping squares. Click on the top square to open the color palette. Choose the color you want use by either scrolling through the color wheel or entering in individual red, green and blue number values, and then click on "OK".

  6. Step 6

Go back to your blank image and use the left mouse button to apply the colored brush to the image. Switch between different colors by clicking on the color palette again and going to a different color.

Tips & Warnings
  • To change the size of the brush tool you're using, click on the arrow next to the "Brush" heading in the bar at the top of the screen to bring up a new window. In the window either type in a new brush size or scroll the slider bar.
