It's hard to maintain any sort of regular routine when you're on the road, much less keep a fitness schedule. Here are tips on how to stay fit while traveling.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Exercise shoes
  • Exercise clothes
  • Jump rope (optional)

    Before You Leave

  1. Step 1

Pack smart. Be sure to pack your exercise clothes and shoes in your suitcase so that you have them at the ready both while you're traveling and at your destination.

  2. Step 2

Plan ahead for your workout. Tuck a jump rope into your suitcase, and program your iPod or MP3 player with workout-friendly songs or a downloaded workout routine. Prepare ahead of time to work out and you'll be more likely to do it.

  3. Step 3

Dress appropriately. If you wear constricting clothes and uncomfortable shoes, you are less likely to walk any distance. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that allow for easy movement and you'll be more prone to walk a few extra steps and get more exercise.

  4. At the Airport

  5. Step 1

If you drive yourself to the airport, select longer term parking or parking where you have to walk a little farther. Every extra step counts toward more exercise. Do not park in an unsafe area; be sure that you select a safe and well-lit spot, especially if you will be returning alone or after dark.

  6. Step 2

Walk, don’t ride. Walk the concourse to your gate rather than taking the tram or other available transportation.

  7. Step 3

Skip the junk food. Instead of fast food burgers, have a salad (dressing on the side) or other more healthful foods. Drink water instead of soda or juice to save on calories as well.

  8. At Your Destination

  9. Step 1

Take a walk. Talk to the front desk or concierge about walking paths in the area or local area parks within walking distance. It’s great exercise, plus a nice way to see the city from a resident’s perspective.

  10. Step 2

Work out in your room. Many hotels offer fit packages with weights and other small pieces of equipment that you can use in your room. Or get creative and use what you have already--use full water bottles as weights, do squats holding onto the back of a chair or the coffee table. Run the stairs. Use the jump rope you packed in your suitcase or fire up your music device for inspiring workout music.

  11. Step 3

Drink plenty of water and other low- or no-calorie fluids. Stay hydrated for optimal health and to save on calories.

  12. Step 4

Use the hotel's fitness center if there is one available. Many hotel fitness centers feature treadmills, stationary bikes and even a weight machine.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't overdo it. Don't exercise more than your usual routine at home, or if you're starting a new exercise regiment, start slowly.
  • Always check with your doctor or health care provider before starting a new exercise regiment.
