Artists and musicians don’t always have a lot of spare cash on hand to support their art and their tools. Being artists, though, and gifted with creativity, we come up with ways to create what we need at a fraction of the price of retail. Here is an idea for building a PVC guitar stand which can be mounted on the wall or set on the floor.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • The PVC supplies:
  • 5 feet of ¾-inch pipe
  • 1 foot of ½-inch pipe
  • 5 ¾-inch tees
  • 2 ¾-inch elbows
  • 1 ½-inch tee
  • 2 ½-inch tees
  • 1 ¾-inch conversion elbow
  • Foam supplies
  • 2 feet of ¾-inch pipe insulation foam

Step1
Cut the foam and PVC. You will need to cut the foam and PVC in the following dimensions: 30” of ¾”2-by-7-inch piece of ¾-inch PVC6 inches of ¾-inch PVC2-by-2.5-inch piece of ¾-inch PVC2-by-1.25-inch piece of ¾-inch PVC3-by-1.25-inche piece of ½-inch PVC2-by-3-inch piece of ½-inch PVC2-by-6-inch piece of foam3-by-2.5-inch piece of foam
Step2
Fit the foam. Now the foam needs to be cut to fit over the ½-inch PVC tee. Cut a wedge into a 2.5-inch foam piece by first marking the middle and drawing two lines to make a right angle. The result should be a 90-degree wedge in the foam. Finish by cutting through the foam’s slit so that it can be opened.
Step3
Fit the PVC. The other two pieces of the 2.5-inch foams are for the ½-inch PVC pipe pieces. Find the slit on the foam and cut ½ inch away from it, following the shape of the circle so that the two edges will fit together. Drawing the line first will result in the best results.
Step4
Connect the base. To put the base together, connect each of the 6-inch pieces of ¾-inch PVC to a tee. Put an elbow on one end of each 7-inch piece of ¾-inch PVC. The 1.25-inch pieces of ¾-inch PVC are used to connect the elbow to the tees. The front of the base is done.
Step5
To make the back of the base, connect the 2.5-inch pieces of ¾-inch PVC to both sides of a tee, then put a tee on both sides of the 2.5-inch pieces.
Step6
Continue assembly. Continue by sliding the 6-inch foam pieces onto the 7-inch PVC pieces, and connecting the front and back using the exposed ends of the 7-inch pieces.
Step7
Check your parts. The top assembly holds the guitar neck. Begin by connecting two 1.25-inch pieces of ½-inch PVC to the ½-inch tee. Attach the two ½-inch elbows and put the 3-inch pieces of ½-inch PVC into the elbows. Put the foam onto the tee and 3-inch pieces and it is ready to be sealed (try gorilla glue). To finish up the top, connect the tee to the ¾-inch to ½-inch conversion elbow using the 1.25-inch piece of ½-inch PVC. All your parts and supplies should be used now.
Step8
Assemble the PVC stand. Connect the 30-inch piece of ¾-inch PVC to the conversion elbow on the top, to form the middle tee on the base. The angle of the stand can easily be adjusted to hold the guitar without falling over.
Step9
With a few extra pieces this project can be wall mounted. You can also choose to make it even sturdier by gluing the joints. If you want to keep it transportable, do not glue the joints. However you decide to customize it for yourself, the result will be a great product for a fraction of what you would have paid for it at the shop.
