How to Install Photoshop Brushes

The Adobe Photoshop line of products have a number of powerful features which can make graphic work easier. One of the easiest of these to use are brushes, which transform your paintbrush cursor into new shapes. These shapes can be used to stamp their designs directly onto your workspace. While Photoshop comes preloaded with several different brush sets, you can also download and install new brushes to expand your graphic options even more.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer with a version of Adobe Photoshop installed
  • Photoshop brushes to install

Instructions

    • 1

There are a number of websites which feature Photoshop brushes that you can download. Most sites which feature new brushes for download will have examples of what the brushes look like when they are used so as to better assist you in choosing the brushes that you like. When you find one or more brushes that meet your needs, download them; they may be archived in a .zip or .rar file.

    • 2

If the brushes that you downloaded are in an archive file, extract them into the brushes folder in your main Photoshop directory (often C:\Program Files\Photoshop, though this will be different if you installed Photoshop in a different directory). Make sure that you don't allow the archive to create any new folders in the brushes folder when it extracts, or you will have to move the brushes to the main folder and then delete the new ones. If the brushes weren't in an archive file, simply move them from the location they downloaded to into the brushes folder (or set them to download to the brushes folder when you first start to download them).

    • 3

If you decide that you want to remove some of the brushes because they are increasing the load time of Photoshop or you simply don't like them anymore, delete them from the brushes folder. Since Photoshop won't detect them when it loads they won't be present in your brushes menu from that point on.

Tips & Warnings

  • Trying different brushes in combination can create even more interesting effects.
  • It's possible to edit existing brushes or to create new ones from scratch in order to get the brush effects that best suit your needs.
  • Always scan any downloads with a virus scanner before opening them in order to make sure that there aren't any nasty surprises waiting for you.
