Creative minds are needed each day to help inspire people and think outside the box. A great way to put your creative talents to work is by learning how to start a design business for yourself. Read on to learn how to start a design business.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Decide whether you offer general or specialized design. One of the first things you should do when you start a design business is decided if you want to specialize in one area of design or work with clients that have a variety of design needs. For example, some design business only specialize in producing graphics or publications, while others take a more general approach and adapt to designing whatever their customer needs.
Step2
Find a location for your business. For some people finding a location for their design business is Step 2 while others wait until later when their business has successfully taken off. A design business can be run from your own home if you have the right skills and business in place to make it succeed. However if you will be working with clients in your area and needing a place for them to come to or meet at you will most likely want to find a location to house your office and business.
Step3
Register your business as appropriate. Design businesses may not need to be registered in your state or city if you work from home depending upon what the laws are in your area. You should determine these in advance though since this can prevent additional hassles or potentially legal problems down the road.
Step4
Perform work for family and friends to develop your portfolio. Getting future clients often requires presenting a portfolio of what you have done in the past. A great way to build your portfolio is by working on small design jobs for family and friends. Whether it is a restaurant that needs a new menu, a store that needs a new logo or your church bulletin simply getting a makeover, these can be beneficial in making your business successful.
Step5
Market and advertise your services to potential clients. While it is possible to spread the word about your design business to the mass media, you may find that networking with local companies and business owners proves more profitable for your business. This is true for most designers, since businesses are usually the ones needing or requesting the services provided by your design company.

Tips & Warnings

  • A great way to spread the word about your design business is to develop a presence on the web through a website or blog.
  • It is best to draft a sample contract when setting up the logistics of your design business since it can be easily adapted and used for any clients you get. This can help prevent legal problems that may arise from creative differences.
