Step 1
Speak to the church clergy to find out what kind of dress is allowed in the church. Some will require that you cover up to your neck and not wear bare arms. Other churches are okay with a strapless dress. This will help you plan your dress accordingly.
-
Step 2
Choose a simple dress that will allow you to wear a jacket or shrug layered over it. It can still be embellished, but cannot be bulky in the upper portion because your covering won't lie properly.
-
Step 3
Choose a cover-up for your wedding dress. There are wedding shrugs that cover the upper back and arms. There are wedding jackets that can cover the upper part of the dress and may even button all the way up the neck. There are wedding coats that can cover the entire dress and reveal a completely different look when taken off.
-
Step 4
Make sure that your wedding dress cover-up is an integral part of the wedding dress and does not look awkward or as though it's an after thought. If you choose a shrug, or wedding jacket, have it beaded or a lace overlay added to match the pattern on the wedding dress. This way, when it is being worn, no one will be able to tell that it is a separate piece. Consider having a jacket overlay made that not only covers the chest, back and shoulders, but also creates a chapel train for the dress, you can create a really long and elaborate train this way. After the wedding ceremony, you can remove it, revealing a reception dress that you can move freely in.
-
Step 5
Add invisible eye hooks to attach your wedding dress cover-up to your wedding dress. This way, it will stay in place and not move or shift while you are wearing it.

on 10/13/2008 OK, take a deep breath. Not everyone is going to agree with your idea of style, solitaire8868. http://offbeatbride.com/2008/07/tacky

on 9/26/2008 You've got to be kidding - right?? You don't have to be religious to know that revealing wedding dresses are tacky, not classy. Wearing a revealing wedding gown is NOT the trend of the day. Check out theknot.com or any other reputable wedding site to get a sample of wedding dresses.
Where are you gathering your information from? Or are you simply attending the wrong weddings?
