If you find yourself at a loss for fabric to make a pillow from, or if you have a favorite piece of clothing you don’t want to get rid of, you can make a pillow out of your clothing. This is a fun project and with a bit of creativity and a bit of time, you can use clothing to decorate an entire room with pillows.

From Quick Guide: Introduction to Pillows
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Clothing items
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread
  • Sewing machine optional
  • Pillow form or stuffing
  1. Step 1

Choose a piece of clothing to make your pillow from. A t-shirt is a great place to start, but you can use a cotton shirt, a tweed skirt, or a suit jacket.

  2. Step 2

Cut out your pattern. Cut two equal sized squares in your clothing item. This can be a square from two different clothing items, or it can be the front and back of one clothing item.

  3. Step 3

Sew your pillow. Place your pillow front and back halves together with the insides out. Sew three sides of the pillow and ½ of the fourth side.

  4. Step 4

Turn pillow case right side out and iron it flat, being sure to iron your seams flat.

  5. Step 5

Insert your pillow form and fluff it out to fit all corners of the pillow covering well. You may also fill your pillow with batting if you so choose.

  6. Step 6

Finish your pillow by sewing the opening with small stitches by hand. If you like, you can add buttons, buckles, or other accessories to the pillow. These accessories can come from the clothing item, or from your sewing materials.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you wish, you can add a lace overlay or other decorative element to the pillow as is shown in the image.
