Nothing produces soft, smooth, youthful looking skin like a naturally exfoliating body scrub. Unlike commercially prepared scrubs, this homemade version contains ingredients that actually nourish your skin and promote cellular renewal without harsh, potentially irritating chemicals. This recipe will leave your skin fresh feeling and with a healthy glow. Its fragrance will remind you of the tropical aroma of a pina colada. This body scrub is intended to be used before a shower. With regular use, you will find your skin becoming more supple and less prone to dryness.

From Quick Guide: Body Exfoliating Guide
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 1/2 C Granulated sugar
  • 1/2 C Coconut oil
  • 4 tsp. Fresh pineapple juice
  • 4 tbs. Honey
  • 4 Drops of vanilla essential oil
  • Wooden mixing spoon
  • Non-metal mixing bowl
  • Clean, dry container or jar with a lid
  • 2 Bath towels
  1. Step 1

Pour the granulated sugar into the bowl. Crush any lumps you may find. Add the coconut oil and stir thoroughly to combine well. Granulated sugar is a natural exfoliant that removes dry skin cells, and the coconut oil is a rich moisturizer.

  2. Step 2

Add the pineapple juice, honey, and the essential oil. Mix until the sugar base has been saturated. Place the body scrub into the prepared jar. Pineapple juice contains an enzyme called papain that stimulates the replacement of old skin cells with fresh new ones. Honey is a natural antibacterial agent and cleanser that also softens skin, and the vanilla essential oil contains trace amounts of phytonutrients that nourish the skin (it also smells great).

  3. Step 3

Take the jar into the bathroom with the towels and undress. Stand on one of the towels. Scoop small amounts of the scrub into your palm and massage the mixture gently in a circular motion into your skin all over your body. Pay close attention to any dull or dry areas. Don't forget your elbows, knees, and ankles.

  4. Step 4

Turn on the shower when you feel ready. Step in and rinse off the body scrub with warm water. Use soap or shower gel as you normally would. Step out of the shower when you are finished, and gently pat yourself dry--don't rub, or you may irritate your freshly exfoliated skin.

  5. Step 5

Tightly seal any leftover scrub for later use.

Tips & Warnings
  • You may place the jar in a bag and keep it at room temperature.
  • Because you are using coconut oil, do not chill this mixture if you wish to use it again soon. Coconut oil becomes solid when cool.
  • Use the remainder within seven days, and make a new batch each week. This scrub can be used every day unless you have extremely sensitive skin. If you wish to keep it longer, you may place it in the refrigerator, provided that you allow it to soften at room temperature for at least an hour or more so that it can become soft again.
  • If you are allergic to pineapple, you may substitute lemon juice in the same amounts. Be advised that lemon can sting, so don't apply over any wounds or cuts.
  • If your skin is irritated or damaged for any reason, wait until it is healed before using this or any other body scrub.
