Basmati rice is a strong but delicious-smelling long-grain rice. It grows in the Himalayas and is very popular in Indian cooking. It comes out dry, not soggy, so it makes a fine base for sauces and other dishes.Basmati rice comes in brown and white varieties, but the brown takes a lot longer to cook. When cooked, every cup of dry basmati rice will yield three cups. As with all rice, the real secret is to watch it and test it at various stages. But cooking it to perfection entails paying special attention to the initial soaking and rinsing. Follow the steps below and make perfect basmati rice!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Basmati rice
  • Non-stick saucepan
  • Water

Step1
Soak the rice in cold water for about 10 minutes.
Step2
Rinse the rice with cold water until the water runs out clear and free of white starch.
Step3
Transfer the rice to the saucepan and cover the top of the rice with cold water. Boil for 5 to 8 minutes until the rice is firm but not hard. Do not overcook!
Step4
Drain the rice and rinse. Return it to the pot with 2-1/2 cups water and steam gently for about 30 minutes or until tender. Remove the rice from the heat and season as desired.
