United Combat Style is a form of martial arts that incorporates the most effective moves from tae kwon do, shotokon, kempo and kung fu, as well as components of wrestling, thai boxing and acupressure (to quickly subdue an opponent). This ideal set of self-defense techniques includes the combination parry/open-hand punch, an efficient way to deflect a frontal attack while throwing your opponent off balance.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Assume a right ready stance. Place your right foot in front of you, angled at about 45 degrees to the inside. Your back foot should point forward at a slight angle to the front foot. Elevate your back heel a couple of inches and align it with the big toe on your front foot. Square your hips to the side and hold your arms in a defensive position, ending either in fists or open hands. Angle your shoulders slightly forward.
Step2
Parry a right frontal attack by lowering your right hand to meet your opponent’s upper forearm, turning your hand palm upward in the process. Push down on the arm, forcing it away and to your left.
Step3
Turn your hand palm-down after making contact with your opponent’s arm and hold it down, wrapping your fingers around it. This movement should be swift but fluid; it is not an attack, so it should be steady and smooth, focusing on technique rather than power.
Step4
Extend your left arm to your opponent’s shoulder with an open hand, making contact with the heel of your hand. This movement should be made with a forceful snap.
Step5
Draw both arms back into a defensive position while withdrawing slightly, keeping your ready stance throughout the entire combination.

Tips & Warnings

  • Reaction time is crucial in parrying—ideally, you should deflect an attack before your opponent makes contact with your body.
  • Maintain balance before, during and after the move. Proper balance tips the advantage in your favor.
  • Never attempt full-contact sparring with an opponent who is not wearing protective sparring gear. Use a karate pad or stop your moves short instead.
