How to Care for Fall Mums

The wonderful daisylike blooms of fall mums adorn porches and decks as fall grows near. These beautiful flowers come in a wide range of colors and are simply stunning potted. Fall mums are more than just pretty flower to show off for a few weeks in the fall. They can be planted right in the garden bed to return each year and reach full bloom just in time for fall.

Instructions

1. Choose a location that receives at least a half day of full sun. If you can place them in full sun, they will do even better.

2. Prepare the soil by tilling to at least 6 inches. The soil should be loose and well drained.

3. Add compost and mix in well with the existing soil.

4. Remove the mums from the pot and set them in the soil so that the soil just covers the original soil line on the plant. Firm the soil around the plant with your hands and water thoroughly.

5. Water whenever you see signs of wilting or the soil dries.

6. Cut mums back to the soil level after they have finished blooming.

7. Mulch with 3 to 4 inches of straw or hay to prevent damage to the roots during the winter.
