This great stitch is simple for even a beginning knitter, and creates a great textured checkerboard-type look that will make any piece of work pop.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Yarn
  • Knitting needles
Step1
Choose the yarn you want to work with and needles that match the weight of your yarn (see yarn packaging for needle size suggestions).
Step2
Cast on your stitches in multiples of 8 in your preferred method of casting on. For example, 8 times 4 equals 32 stitches.
Step3
Row 1: (Right Side) purl 2, knit 4, repeat these 6 stitches to the end of the rowRow 2: Purl to the end of the rowRow 3: Repeat row 1Row 4: Purl to the end of the rowRow 5: Knit 3, purl 2, knit 4, repeat these 6 stitches to the last 3 stitches, purl 2, knit 1Row 6: Purl to the end of the rowRow 7: Repeat row 5Row 8: Purl to the end of the row
Step4
Repeat these 8 rows until your piece reaches the desired length.
Step5
Bind off, preferably using the basic bind-off.

Tips & Warnings

  • This is a great simple stitch that adds texture to any piece such as a blanket, blanket squares, dishcloth or scarf.
