Instructions

Start your carnation seeds indoors. You can do this in the late winter to make sure they are established enough for a transplanting.

    • 2

Transplant your seedlings into your flower garden, preferably in the early spring. When doing this, make sure you give the plants plenty of room to go. Seedlings should be planted approximately 12 inches apart. The soil should be damp but not too wet, as standing water can cause them to rot.

    • 3

Make sure that your carnations have plenty of sun. They're hardy plants, but they do prefer full sun.

    • 4

Water the carnations when the weather gets dry. Again, soil should be damp but there should be no standing water.

    • 5

Fertilize once or twice a month, depending on the natural quality of the soil. A standard brand fertilizer from a garden store will do nicely.

    • 6

If you have a perennial carnation, watch to see when the plants begin to go dormant. This will probably be after the first few light frosts. Apply mulch to protect them from cold winter temperatures, and remove the mulch in the spring.
