Among the safest of all investments is the U.S. Savings Bond, because it is backed by the full faith and credit of the United States government. The Savings Bond has been popular among families because it can be purchased in small denominations by any resident of the United States who has a Social Security Number, even minors. The United States treasury currently issues 2 types of U.S. Savings Bonds, Type EE and Type I. Type E Bonds may still be outstanding, but they are no longer being sold by the Treasury. Each type of bond has significant differences in the manner in which interest is calculated, but the Treasury has made it easy to find the value of a currently owned U.S. Savings Bond.
