In today’s job market, it’s critical that you find ways of standing out. The copywriting field is no exception, and your resume is the best place to start. Here’s how to create a resume for a copywriting job that will separate you from the competition.

Make a list of all the different types of copywriting you have done, such as SEO Copywriting, Direct Mail Copywriting, Advertising Copywriting, Electronic Media Copywriting and Collateral Copywriting.

Give each of these types of copywriting a special section of its own under the Work History section of your resume.

Provide bulleted details of your experience under each copywriting section in Work History. For instance, your SEO section may read something like “Perform keyword analysis for client websites” … “Write meta tag titles, descriptions and keyword strings for page properties” … “Research and write keyword-rich content” … and “Consistently help clients achieve top 10 search engine ranking.”

Create a separate section called Employers & Clients instead of listing them under the Work History section. As always, be sure to include your title, the location of the position and the dates of employment.

Organize your resume in the following order: your name and contact information, Work History, Employers & Clients, Education, Special Skills.

Rearrange the order of your copywriting sections depending on the type of job for which you’re applying. For example, if you’re interviewing for an SEO job and you have SEO experience, push that section to the top.

Organize your portfolio in the same order as you list your type of copywriting experience on your resume. The only exception would be if you have created campaigns in which several different types of copywriting are represented. For instance, maybe you wrote the web content, direct mail letters, print ads, radio spots and press kit materials for the launch of a new product or service. In that case, group these materials together in your portfolio for ultimate impact.

Tips & Warnings
Though many sources advise keeping your resume to one page, if you have the experience to fill two pages, by all means, do it when you create a resume for a copywriting job. A lengthier resume outlining an impressive career is far superior to a one-pager that forces you to leave things out.
