1. Begin by determining what type of adoption you want to do. Adoption home study providers often only do certain types of home studies. Decide if you want to do a private domestic adoption, a state adoption or an international adoption.

2. Look in you phone book and on the internet for listings of home study providers in your area. View their websites or contact them to request more information.

3. Once you have narrowed your choice down to several providers, call to ask questions about the home studies. Ask about their requirements, the costs involved and the time frame between your home visit and receiving your completed home study. You should also request copies of the provider's license or state certification.

4. After talking to the agency, try to find other families who have used this provider and get references from them. The home study provider should be able to give you a list of references. However, it is a good idea to do your own research too since the home study provider will likely only have you contact those who were happy with their performance.

5. Once you have selected a provider who will meet your needs, submit the initial paperwork and set up your first home visit. Your journey towards adoptive parenthood has begun!
