Pet Ribbon Snake

You have always dreamed of owning a pet snake and now you have decided to purchase one. If you have not already set up your snake's habitat you need to do that first. Pet stores usually carry young snakes so they are smaller and easier to handle. They also lean towards the non-aggressive breeds. If you want to find a mature snake you will probably need to find an individual with a snake for sale that you can purchase. How do you find snakes for sale?

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the size and breed of snake that you want to find. Do some research so you know how big your snake will get and what you will need to feed it as an adult.

      Juvenile snake

Look at your local pet stores for young snakes of popular breeds. Some of the popular breeds for beginners are the California Kingsnake, Corn snake, and the Ball Python.

    • 3

Call or visit your local humane society. You can also ask to have your name put on a list of people to call for reptiles. If your humane society does not accept these pets they do take referrals and place them in rescues.

    • 4

Visit your local animal rescue or the nearest reptile rescue. These are pets surrendered by their owners or confiscated and they need new homes. The rescue will know about the health and temperament of the snake. These rescues sometimes take their adoptable pets to special events to gain exposure. Ask your local pet store if they will be hosting an event or know of one coming up. You can find the rescues nearest to you by visiting Pet Finder. Find a snake with habitat from an individual

Locate an individual who has a snake for sale. These are sometimes the best deals. Some people will sell the snake, cage, and accessories for a price well below the retail of buying everything separately. Find individuals near to your home in your local newspaper, free community ad paper, Petfinder.com, Petclassifieds.us, Angelfire.com, Petreptiles.com, and Faunaclassifieds.com. You will find the links to these websites in the resource section of this article.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many snakes will accept frozen mice or rats for food as opposed to using live food.

  • Frozen food is safer for your snake.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly after handling or feeding your snake as you can get salmonella.
