Flies can be a nuisance, especially if they manage to get into your house. They can really become a problem if they gain access to the garbage cans in your home. If flies decide your garbage can would make a suitable bed and breakfast, you can bet your garbage can is where they’ll be eating and breeding. Nobody wants to share their home with these germ-invested creatures, so measures need to be taken to ensure they never make their way into your home. Here are some steps you can take to make sure flies don’t become tenants in your house’s garbage cans.

How to Keep Flies Out of Your House's Garbage Cans

  1. Step 1

Do Your Best to Keep Flies OutsideI’ve heard people say prevention is the best cure. I realize this statement was probably made with reference to health and wellness, but I feel it can be applied to other things as well. In this case it would be having your house invaded by flies. This is a problem that’s best treated before it happens. Make sure flies can’t get into your house through windows or doors. Install screens, and if you already have screens, make sure they have no holes in them. If you have screen doors, make sure they fit properly and close quickly. Flies are fast, so you should be able to close your door before they fly in. Also, don’t keep a light on outside and above the door. Flies will gather around the light and then come through the door when it’s opened.

  2. Step 2

Keep Your Can CleanWhen it comes to flies, your garbage can is equivalent to an all-you-can-eat buffet. Flies love fruits and vegetables and will feast and lay eggs on discarded fruit and vegetables. If you take your garbage out of the house every day, there will be nothing for the flies to eat, so make it a habit to take your trash out daily. It’s also a good idea to keep your garbage cans thoroughly washed at all times and tightly covered.

  3. Step 3

Trap Flies With Flypaper If you see that you can’t seem to keep the flies out of your house, think about using some flypaper to catch and eliminate these pests. The flies will stick to the flypaper and die.
