Obtain any and all permits and licenses that you will need to own and operate a business.

Check zoning laws and regulations if you plan to operate the business on your existing property. You may have to find another location.

Use cuttings and transplants from YOUR existing plants and shrubbery to start your nursery inventory. (See TIPS for more information.)

Once your inventory is sufficient to begin operating your business, start advertising your opening date.

Have everything ready on your opening date; however, do not start too soon, as the plants may begin wilting or drooping, and will not sell as well, if at all.

Tips & Warnings
Take advantage of the times when different organizations have “free plant” days, if you can use the plants they have. If you do not intend to sell a certain type of plant, however, don’t get it just because it’s free.
If you need to put off the actual opening date of your nursery until you have enough inventory, then do so. It is better to be completely ready than to open too soon.
MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN COMPLIANCE WITH ALL BUSINESS AND ZONING LAWS! If you should be “shut down” because of violations, you will not only lose any investment capital you may have had to use, but may even have to pay some fines.
Keep careful track of all aspects of your business. You will need exact information for tax purposes and other legal and financial needs.
