Step 1
Build the physical counter itself. Most bars are made of laminated wood or stainless steel. You can use an indoor counter if your house comes equipped with it, or you can build a mini bar outside your house. For those who frequently throw parties, hiring people to build the bar with a working sink is a good option. But for those who want to create a simple area to serve drinks, you can create the bar next to an already existing sink or water outlet, and use a cooler instead of buying a fridge.

Step 2
Purchase glasses and accessories. Different types of glasses are used to serve beer and mixed drinks. Invest in a couple of glasses, from high balls to champagne flutes to flares.

Step 3
Purchase the alcohol. After you have planned and have a fair idea of what you will be serving, buy the alcohol. Usually, wholesale stores like Costco will save you a lot of money since you will be buying beer, wine and hard liquor in bulk. For mixed drinks, you will need the base hard liquor plus the non-alcoholic mix and any other items that go into a mixed drink, such as lemons or olives. Think about the mix drinks that you want to make and list down the ingredients-- typically, a wet bar will have triple sec, grenadine and peach schnapps. Also, think about the extras that come with all the drink-- margaritas have salt, martinis have olives, and some people like adding lime slices to their beer.

Step 4
Purchase drink accessories. To make drinks, you need shakers, stirrers, bottle openers and ice buckets. Some wet bars have trays for nuts and snacks. Stores like Sur La Table have these tools available.
