  1. How to Identify Winter Itch Symptoms

    • 1

Look for an outbreak of hives. These will appear as pale, red swellings that occur in gropus. These swellings will likely burn and sting.

    • 2

Look for hives to appear after the skin has been exposed to cold temperatures and when the skin is warmed after the exposure.

    • 3

The skin will begin to swell and the hives will start to itch within minutes after the skin is warmed.

    • 4

Expect the intensity of the itching to be severe and to disrupt normal activities.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are suffering from winter itch, be sure to moisturize your skin after taking a bath or shower. The moisturizer will help to hold water in the skin.

  • Petroleum jelly and mineral oil are the most effective moisturizers.

  • Running a furnace during the winter contributes to dry air, and therefore, winter itch. It is a good idea to use humidifiers during the winter.

  • Do not use soaps that contain lye. Lye is very irritating to the skin.

  • If you believe that you have winter itch, and the itching is severe, be sure to talk with your doctor.
