How to Get the Most Out of an iPod

So you’ve spent all this money on an iPod and all you do with it is listen to music? There is so much more you can do with this little magic box, much of which many iPod owners do not use--or even know about. Read on for some great ways to use your iPod.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Use your iPod for viewing photos.

1. Download pictures from your digital camera into iPhoto on your computer.
2. Connect your iPod to your computer. Click on the iPod icon under “Devices” in your iTunes window.
3. Click on the photos tab on your iPod’s preferences screen and check the “Sync photos from” box.
4. Choose “iPhoto” from the drop-down menu.
5. Click one of the next three buttons for the pictures you wish to select. You may select all the pictures in iPhoto, the most recent pictures, or selected albums.
6. Click “Apply” at the bottom of your iTunes iPod Photos page to send the pictures to your iPod.

Make use of your iPod’s address book function.

7. Use the names, addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses and other pertinent information from your Windows Address Book, the Mac OSX Address Book, Outlook or Outlook Express, or even Entourage.
8. Click on “contacts” in the iPod preferences page.
9. Check the “Sync Address Book” contacts box.
10. Select the “All contacts” or the “Selected groups” radio buttons. (If you have pictures included with your contacts, check the “Include contacts' photos.”
11. Click “Apply” at the bottom of your iTunes Contacts page to send the information to your iPod.
12. Click on “Contacts” on your iPod and scroll to the name of the person whose information you want to access. Click and the information you need will appear on your screen.

Make use of the calendar function on your iPod.

13. Check the “Sync iCal calendars” box from the bottom of the “Contacts” page of your iPod preferences page.
14. Click on the “all calendars” button or the “selected calendars” button.
15. Click the “Apply” button on the bottom of the Contacts page, and your calendar(s) will be there when you select them on your iPod.
16. Click on "Calendars" on your iPod to access the calendar.
17. Advance your cursor to any day and click; your events for that day will appear on your iPod’s screen.

Use your iPod as a stopwatch or timer.

18. Scroll to “Extras” on your iPod’s home screen and click.
19. Scroll to “Stopwatch” on the “Extras” screen and click.
20. Click on “Timer” and the Stopwatch appears on the screen.
21. Scroll to the right button to clear the times and the left button to activate the "Start" button.
22. Scroll to the right to get to the “lap” button and click to start a new lap.

Watch and listen to Podcasts.

23. Select “Podcasts” from the left hand column under “LIBRARY” in your iTunes window.
24. Click on the “Podcast Directory” button on the bottom of the screen.
25. Select a podcast by double clicking on its icon and click on subscribe.
26. Select as many podcasts as you like, but keep in mind that downloading will be slow if you select too many at one time.
27. View your video podcasts by scrolling down to “Videos” on your iPod screen, clicking, and then selecting the podcast you wish to watch.
28. Listen to audio podcasts by clicking on “Music” on your main iPod screen and clicking. Scroll to “Podcasts” and click, then click on the podcast you wish to listen to.

• Don’t be afraid to experiment with your iPod. You aren’t going to hurt anything by trying different things with it, and you may discover some great feature you didn’t know about.
